PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ART PIECES ARE MADFE BY NATIONAL AWARDEE

Sandalwood is a very costly material that is used to carve objects and has significant religious significance. The history of sandalwood extends over 4,000 years. Its wood is highly valued by many civilizations and has a strong scent. This tree is evergreen and can reach a height of 16 meters.

The Art Of Sandalwood Carving:

Additionally, it is a parasite tree that will burrow into its host tree and gradually "suck the nutrients" until the tree collapses, leaving sandalwood standing tall in its place. Sandalwood trees are never chopped down; instead, they are uprooted in the rainy season, when the valuable essential oil content of the heartwood and roots is higher. Its scent is unique, woodsy, and sweet—just like wine, which becomes better with age.

Sandalwood is not only one of the oldest scents ever discovered by humans, but it also has significant religious significance and is a highly sought-after material for carving objects. The essential oil of sandalwood grows in the heartwood and roots of the tree, lubricating the core of the tree with its subtly distinctive scent.

There is a vast belt of forests in Karnataka, and there are sandalwood carvers all throughout India.

Sandalwood is of two sorts:

1 Sugandha which is close-grained and yellowish-earthy coloured in shading and used for carving.

2 Nagagandha which is darkish-earth coloured in shading and from which oil is extricated.

During the rainy season, when its roots are more abundant in oil, sandalwood trees are uprooted rather than felled. The refined wood is utilized to create an abundance of products, which include exquisitely wrought chariots, idols of deities, and decorative pieces like dolls, musical instruments like the Indian sitar, photo frames, combs, temples, God figures, enormous spell-bound wall arts, dolls, and the ever-popular elephants.

Another common technique is jaali, or fret work with designs in both high and low relief. After being polished and smoothed, the wood is cut into the appropriate shapes. The resulting object is then polished using sand paper to give it a final smoothed appearance after designs are carved out of it with chieseals.

Note-The older the Sandalwood is, the more better quality and costly it gets over time.
