Rhodes grass can be used as
permanent pasture or a short- to medium-term pasture
ley. It is also useful for erosion control by virtue
of its spreading growth habit. It makes good hay if cut at or
just before early flowering, and provides better standover
feed than buffel grass or the panics.
The grass is very
deep-rooted, able to get to depths of 4.5m. Rhodes grass is a
high quality forage, particularly when it's
young, and is mostly utilised in grazing situations. While it
can be cut as hay or used as a deferred feed, it's unsuitable
for silage.
