Dunite is a mono-mineralic, ultra-basic rock consisting of more or less olivine. It typically contains 36 to 42% MgO and 30 to 39% SiO2. Dunite is rarely found within continental rocks, but where it is found, it typically occurs at the base of ophiolite sequences where slabs of mantle rock from a subduction zone have been thrust onto continental crust by obduction during continental or island arc collisions.
It has several applications in the construction industry such as dimension stone, cement manufacture, construction aggregate, for road aggregate, making natural cement and raw material for the manufacture of mortar. Dunite has several industrial applications too, such as casting of steel, as a neutralizing agent for industrial waste and in metalworking processes.
