Galvanized steel coils are coated with a zinc layer because rust does not corrode this protective metal. The outermost layer is all zinc, but the successive layers are a mixture of zinc and iron, and the interior is pure steel. These multiple layers are the reason why metals have amazing properties that are resistant to corrosive environments. Zinc also protects the steel by acting as a "sacrificial layer". If the surface of the galvanized steel coil does rust, the zinc will corrode first. This allows zinc to spread over cracks or scratches to prevent rust from reaching the steel.
