The banana has many uses, but the stem (tree) is normally treated as a waste product to be discarded and left to rotten on the farms. The stem is useful and contains fibre, that if extracted can be used to make different products such as baskets, ropes, table mats, bracelets and other forms of decorations. The stem can also be used to make yarns and even paper. This is a small green project from Nigeria with the aim of providing employment for villagers and converting what is otherwise a waste product into something useful.
The fibre is like a rope and can be woven or rolled. When woven, it can be used to make different products for decorations and for sale. For those with the knowledge, it can also be spanned and mixed with other types of yarns.
The banana stem is ethically obtained from farmers in some cases money has been paid to them, in other cases, the farmers just wanted the items to be cleared from their farms so that they can plant new crops.
These items can be weaved and made into ropes and then into any form of decorations.
