Alfalfa Hay or Lucerne

Alfalfa hay is used to feed grazing cattle. Lucerne is a perennial flowering plant in the pea family that prefers neutral soil (pH range 6.8-7.5) with lime additives. Its root nodules contain bacteria that produce high-protein feed without relying on available nitrogen in the soil. Lucerne thrives in deep alluvial soil near river beds in interior regions with extreme seasonal temperature differences. Good quality lucerne hay has about 25% protein content. Commercial production requires replanting every three years.
