Piezoelectric ceramics have the unique capability of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy, and vice versa. Piezoelectric stems from the ancient Greek (piezein), which means ‘to press’ or ‘to squeeze’.

By applying an electric voltage over piezoelectric ceramic, it has the capability to change shape – for example become shorter or wider. This change in shape is not very big – just in the micron range – but it occurs very fast, within milliseconds. Furthermore it is highly reproducible, and accurate in the nano-meter range.

PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) is composed of the two chemical elements Lead and Zirconium combined with the chemical compound Titanate. It is the most common piezoelectric ceramics with a crystalline, perovskite structure, It was pressed in ring or plate shapes, then sintered with high temperature, usually used for ultrasonic transducers that require high temperatures and sensitivity. It could convert AC into 15kHz or 20kHz ultrasound for cleaning and welding purpose.
