Propolis is a resin collected by bees, from buds, flowers and plant exudates, in which the bees add salivary secretions, wax and pollen for the final elaboration of the product (BRASIL, 2001).

The name propolis is derived from the Greek and means “in defense of the city”; in this case, in defense of the hive. Bees use propolis to seal holes in the hive in order to inhibit the action of predators, microorganisms and also to prepare aseptic places for the queen bee to lay and mummify small invading insects and even small animals (ALMEIDA-MURADIAN, 2007).

The color of propolis can vary greatly from region to region, with a wide range of tones from dark brown to red (MARCUCCI, 1996) to green.
