Seamless Rolled Ring Forging
The seamless rolled ring forging process combines strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance through a unique grain flow.
The process begins with cutting the initial material stock to size and then rounding it using open die presses. This rounded piece is subsequently upset and pierced to create a preform, essentially a donut-shaped forging ready for the ring rolling mill. On the rolling mill, axial rolls control the ring's height, while an idler roll applies pressure against a drive roll. These forces reduce the wall thickness and height of the rolled ring while increasing its diameter until the desired size is achieved. At Runchi, we forge seamless rolled rings in a wide range of sizes and grades, including carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, and custom-specific grades.
Advantages of Seamless Rolled Ring Forging:
When it comes to obtaining metal rings for various applications, the choice of the metal forming process is crucial. Cast rings often suffer from poor strength and integrity, while rings cut from plate materials and welded together can be susceptible to fatigue, excessive material, and processing costs. Custom forging, as performed by Runchi experts, offers greater versatility and improved quality while reducing material expenses. Additional benefits include:
Controlled directional grain flow
Increased
strength
Enhanced
structural integrity
Elimination
of inclusions and porosity
Minimized
waste
Elimination
of welding, reducing the risk of part fatigue and breakage
Compared
to Hot Rolled Burnout Plates:
The unidirectional grain flow in hot rolled plates can result in exposed grain ends when cutting the ring shape. This makes the material more prone to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. In contrast, the forging process shapes the material directly into the desired ring size, eliminating the need to remove excess corner stock or center holes. Furthermore, forging offers greater size versatility while minimizing material waste, often leading to cost savings.
Compared to Castings:
Cast rings often lack the desired grain structure, negatively impacting impact toughness, ductility, and fatigue strength. This can potentially lead to cracks or fractures. Forging, on the other hand, provides controlled directional grain flow, increasing strength and offering superior structural integrity. It eliminates the common issues of inclusions and porosity found in castings.
Compared to Rolled and Welded Rings:
Fabricated rings can be susceptible to porosity and inclusions in the material. Extensive welding in rolled and welded rings can compromise part integrity, corrosion resistance, and shape, potentially causing distortion. The seamless rolled ring forging process avoids welding entirely, maintaining part integrity, corrosion resistance, and shape. This ultimately results in a stronger ring with reduced risk of fatigue and breakage.
Choose seamless rolled ring forging for superior strength, quality, and performance in your metal rings.
