Polymethylmethacrylate, commonly known as plexiglass and abbreviated as PMMA, has high transparency and is the best transmittance of all plastics, usually more than 92%. It has the advantages of low price and easy machining. It is a commonly used glass substitute material. Plexiglass is an important thermoplastic developed earlier. It has transparency, stability and weather resistance, easy dyeing, easy processing and beautiful appearance. It is widely used in the construction industry.
1 High transparency. Plexiglass is an excellent polymer transparent material with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass. The tube of the solar lamp called artificial small sun is made of quartz because quartz can completely pass through ultraviolet rays. Ordinary glass can only pass through 0.6% UV, but plexiglass can pass through 73%.
2 High mechanical strength. The relative molecular weight of plexiglass is about 2 million. It is a long-chain polymer compound, and the chain forming the molecule is very soft. Therefore, the strength of plexiglass is relatively high, and the tensile and impact resistance is 7-18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a kind of plexiglass treated by heating and stretching, in which the molecular segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, which significantly improves the toughness of the material. Nail into the plexiglass, even if the nail penetrates, there is no crack on the plexiglass. This kind of plexiglass will not break into pieces after being punctured by the bullet. 3 Light weight. The density of plexiglass is 1.18g/cm3;, The weight of materials of the same size is only half of that of ordinary glass and 43% of that of metal aluminum (a light metal).
4 Easy to process. Plexiglass can not only be cut by lathe and drilled by drilling machine, but also be bonded into various shapes with acetone, chloroform and other instruments. It can also be processed into all kinds of products ranging from aircraft cockpit cover to dentures and dentures by plastic molding methods such as blow molding, injection and extrusion.
