N95 respirators are generally used to protect the user from the environment and the environment from the user.
The main criteria tested are these three:
Filter performance (how many aerosols pass through the face mask of the respirator in%)
Leakage (how many aerosols pass in%)
Flow rate (basically how much air flows through without the user suffocating or having difficulty breathing with constant use)
N95 explains:
N: This is a Respirator Rating Letter grade. It stands for "non-oil". If there are no oil-based particles, you can use the mask in the work environment. Other mask ratings are R (8 hours oil resistant) and P (oil resistant).
95: Masks that end with 95 have an efficiency of 95 percent. Masks that end in 99 are 99 percent efficient. Masks with the ending 100 are 99.97 percent efficient and correspond to a HEPA quality filter.
0.3 micrometers: The masks filter out impurities such as dust, mist and vapors. The minimum size of 0.3 micron particles and large droplets will not cross the barrier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Material: The filtration material on the mask is an electrostatic non-woven polypropylene fiber.
Valve: Some N95 disposable masks are optionally equipped with an exhalation valve. "Having an exhalation valve reduces exhalation resistance, which makes it easier to breathe (exhale)," says the CDC.
