The JD906 / JD9XX series diagnostic tools are specially designed to be used with all OBD2-compliant vehicles, including (CAN) communication protocol. The US Environmental Protection Agency EPA requires that all 1996 and newer vehicles (sedans and light trucks) sold in the United States must comply with OBD2 requirements, including all vehicles from the United States, Asia, and Europe.

A small number of 1994 and 1995 gasoline vehicles comply with the OBD2 standard. To verify whether the 1994 or 1995 vehicles comply with the OBD2 standard, please check the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label under the hood or next to the radiator of most cars. If the vehicle complies with the OBD2 standard, the label will indicate OBD2 certification. In addition, government regulations require that all vehicles that comply with the OBD2 standard must have a universal 16-pin data connector-DLC. And the vehicle emission control information label must indicate that the vehicle complies with OBD2.
