This meticulous process has a fascinating history, dating back to 200 AD during the Han Dynasty in Imperial China and gaining prominence after the invention of paper.

Our Paper Mache Box is crafted using the strip method, where paper is cut into strips and bound with adhesive before being applied to a base or supporting framework. Artisans saturate these strips with paste, allowing them to dry and then meticulously shape, paint, decorate, and waterproof the final product. Alternatively, the pulp method involves soaking and boiling paper to create pulp, mixed with glue and shaped directly into the desired form, making it ideal for sculpting smaller or simpler items.

Introduced to Kashmir in the late 14th century, the art of papier-mâché was brought to the region by Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani and his artisan disciples. Using Iranian hand-made paper pulp, these skilled artisans crafted a diverse range of items, including boxes, bowls, trays, étagères, models, birds, animals, vases, lamps, and corporate gifts.
