Product Description

Custom Machined Constantan Copper Contact Pins for Thermocouplers

Constantan is also known as Eureka, Advance, and Ferry. It is a copper–nickel alloy, usually is composed of 55% copper and 45% nickel. This alloy has an adequately high strain sensitivity, or gauge factor, which is relatively insensitive to strain level and temperature. Its resistivity (4.9 x 10−7 Ω·m) is high enough to achieve suitable resistance values in even very small grids, and its temperature coefficient of resistance is fairly low. In addition, constantan is characterized by good fatigue life and relatively high elongation capability. However, constantan tends to exhibit a continuous drift at temperatures above 65°C and this characteristic should be taken into account when zero stability of the strain gauge is critical over a period of hours or days.

Constantan is also used for electrical resistance heating and thermocouples. Its main feature is the low thermal variation of its resistivity, which is constant over a wide range of temperatures. In thermocouples, the machined constantan pins are used as negative conductors to fabricate chromel – constantan (Type E), iron – constantan (Type J) and copper – constantan (Type T).

Chromel – constantan thermocouples (Type: E) give the highest measurement sensitivity of 68 μV/°C, with an inaccuracy of ±0.5% and a useful measuring range of −200 °C up to 900 °C. Unfortunately, while they can operate satisfactorily in oxidizing environments when unprotected, their performance and life are seriously affected by reducing atmospheres.

Iron – constantan thermocouples (Type: J) have a sensitivity of 55 μV/°C and are the preferred type for general purpose
measurements in the temperature range of −40 °C to +750 °C, where the typical measurement inaccuracy is ±0.75%. Their performance is little affected by either oxidizing or reducing atmospheres.

Copper – constantan thermocouples (Type: T) have a measurement sensitivity of 43 μV/°C and find their main application in measuring
subzero temperatures down to −200 °C, with an inaccuracy of ±0.75%. They can also be used in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres to measure temperatures up to 350 °C.
