Description:
Benzyl alcohol is produced naturally by many plants and is
commonly found in fruits and teas. It is also found in a variety
of essential oils including jasmine, hyacinth, and ylang-ylang.It
is also one of the chemical compounds found in castoreum. This
compound is gathered from the beaver plant food.
Benzyl alcohol has nearly the same refraction index of quartz and
wool fibre. If a clear quartz object is immersed in benzyl
alcohol, it becomes almost invisible. This has been used as a
method to non-destructively recognize if an object is made of
true quartz or not (see crystal skull). Similarly, white wool
immersed in benzyl alcohol also becomes almost invisible clearly
revealing contaminants such as dark and medullated fibres and
vegetable matter.
Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid that has a mild, pleasant aromatic scent. It’s also called an “aromatic alcohol,” and is used as a preservative, as a fragrance ingredient, as the active ingredient in head lice treatment, and as a solvent, which simply means that it’s used to dissolve other ingredients to make a smooth formula or solution.
Function:
Benzyl Alcohol,Antibacterial Agent
Benzyl alcohol is used as a bacteriostatic preservative at low
concentration in intravenous medications, cosmetics and topical
drugs.
Benzyl Alcohol is the antiseptic which keeps the steroid solution sterile.
Benzyl Alcohol (BA):A fairly potent solvent, whose main function for our purposes is keeping a solution bacteriostatic. It’s presence as low as 0.9% is enough to prevent practically all microbial growth in solution.
Benzyl Alcohol is often the primary solvent and sometime the only solvent in a steroid given formula. Its primary function is as a sterilizing agent. However, due to its solvency power Benzyl Alcohol is often used to keep hormones in solution with oil or other vehicles. Benzyl Alcohol is also one of the thinnest (that is best for viscosity reduction).
Its use in Steroids is to preserve the suspension for months, even years, without any reduction in sterility. Alcohol is an antibacterial disinfectant and is used as such in many industries. As aforementioned Benzyl Alcohol ensures the Steroid maintains its sterility when used in the right concentration.
Benzyl Alcohol (BA) is used to increase the lipid solubility of esterfied compounds and to prevent bacteria growth in the oil.
The shorter the ester, the more Benzyl Alcohol is needed to get the compound to dissolve.More Benzyl Alcohol is required to dissolve the raw powder to make high concentration products
Application:
(1) Benzyl alcohol is a good middle boiling point
solvent.
(2) The main applications:paint solvent; ink solvent; plexiglass
solvent; photographic developing agent; PVC stabilizer; medicine,
synthetic resin solvent; ointment or liquid medicine; solvent for
meat products stamp-pad ink and ball-point pen
oil.
(3) It is used for carpet degreaser; crater cleaning agent;
silicone solvent stabilizer; benzyl ester or ether
intermediate.
(4) Benzyl alcohol is a kind of very useful perfume fixative. It
is an indispensable spice when jasmine, tuberose or ylang is
mixed, and used to compound soap and daily
cosmetics.
Benzyl alcohol is used as a general solvent for inks, paints,
lacquers, and epoxy resin coatings. It is also a precursor to a
variety of esters, used in the soap, perfume, and flavor
industries. It is also used as a photographic
developer.
Side Effect
However, if too much is used the Steroid will be painful to inject and will cause post injection soreness. The major drawback to this solvent is that it tends to make for painful injections if the concentration goes above 10%. (This is true for any low molecular weight alcohol). Less than this tends to be painless for most people.
Unfortunately, Benzyl Alcohol can also cause the destruction of cells and significant localised pain and inflammation. The discomfort is characterised by fairly rapid onset of a painful, red, swollen area.
