Balfour retractor is a self retaining abdominal wall retractor with various deep and shallow blades that can be attached and removed as needed, used in many laparotomy procedure .

This retractor is placed within the incision, spread apart as needed, and locked in place by tightening of a wing nut. A crossbar mounted on the post holds an oval or round ring to which various sizes of Richardson, malleable and Deaver-like blades may be attached and adjusted, the ratcheted “clips”. It is a self- retaining retractor and is a combination of two well-known retractors; the Gosset and the Doyen. The Balfour retractor term is used synonymously with open surgery.

It consists of the following parts;

• Two broad, curved-outward blades: pushed apart to hold the incision. They can be equipped with a regular spread of 7inches or an extended spread of 10 inches, solid or fenestrated blades.
• A central retractor blade: can be raised or lowered to increase the view of the surgical field.
• A retractor bar holds the incision opening curved blades in place. Can be smooth or ratcheted.
