The leaves of this plant contain carbohydrate-based compounds 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. These compounds, steviosides, can be extracted and used as alternative sweeteners to sugars. Traditionally, stevia leaves have been used for hundreds of years in Paraguay and Brazil to sweeten local teas, medicines and as a "sweet treat.
